Introduction

Inclusive design, or Universal Design, is the process of creating online material that is able to be accessed by all. "In all applications of UD to teaching, instructors anticipate the presence of students with diverse abilities and other characteristics, and make design decisions that result in learning opportunities available to all these individuals, rather than focusing only on the average or "typical" student." (Burgstahler, 2015)

This type of inclusive design is imperative for the success of all students. Based on the infographic posted below and in Unit one, one in four adults in the United States have some type of disability. With so many people experiencing some type of limitation, Universal Design makes sure that all individuals have equitable access to the learning material.

Throughout this course, various empathy challenges were presented. These challenges forced us, the participants, to put ourselves into the role of someone with a significant disability. For example, one challenge took away the use of our fingers and hands and had us use our mouths to navigate our devices. This was extremely difficult and frustrating. I truly think that immersing oneself into the mind/body of someone who struggles with a disability is the only way to get the full experience of the difficulties one may face.
